Statik brings power moves to Shall We Dance

Durban dancers STATIK will bring their unique tempo to the Shall We Dance showcase of Ballroom and Latin American dance.

THE energetic dance duo Statik will once again return to the popular Shall We Dance Ballroom and Latin American showcase at the Playhouse Opera for the sort season from 13 to 21 September.

Statik, made up of Durban dancers Clinton Green and Selwyn Rautenbach have been dancing together since 1995. Selwyn needed an on stage act when he participated in the Mr South Africa and danced with Clinton for the short dance piece. Since then the two have been dancing together on a dancing adventure, dancing around the country at many exciting events.

Selwyn owns and runs a gym and wellness centre while Clinton is busy in the IT field, yet despite demanding careers they both manage to make time for dance. “They have both managed to schedule three to four rehearsals a week for Shall We Dance this year and cannot wait for Durban to see what they have in store.” The two promise to take the audience on a journey with their performance.

“We have our own style, we don’t stick to conventional dance counts and formats. It is what makes our style so unique,” said Selwyn.

“The music we dance to is also important part of the whole package, we don’t usually dance to contemporary music, I usually edit and mix a compilation which includes a few genres for our dance pieces,” added Clinton.

A big inspiration for the dance duo is Michael Jackson, however they are quick to point out that their dance is a tribute to him and certainly don’t want to copy the dance icon.

The two are not trained dancers but self taught, their passion for dancing and their unique style has certainly notched a number of fans because of their unique appeal. “We always want everybody to enjoy what we do and love the crowd participation and energy when people respond to our dancing- we pick up on it,” said Clinton.

The two have danced for Durban songbird Jae for a few years and opened for Usher and Watershed. One of the highlights for them was dancing an event for a Saudi prince in the Seychelles.
