Cyndi lights up the Blues

Blues fans were treated to lively sets which were part of the The Durban International Blues Festival.

The Durban International Blues Festival, sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture, kicked off on Heritage Day at Zacks, Wilson’s Wharf.

The festival was organised by Will Wallace who also fronts Will’s Blues Band.

Seagreen Blues, East Coast Basement Blues, Wills Blues, Zwarte Piets, Electric Petals to name a few, as well as individual artists the likes of Dan Patlansky graced the big stage. Fruteland Jackson from the USA was the invited international artist.

On Wednesday night Bothner’s, Glenwood Village Music and Fender Guitars hosted the Fender Evening, which showcased a range of music including some Afrikaans rock; played predominantly on fender equipment.

One of the highlights of the evening was when Cyndi Kritzinger and her band took the stage surprising the audience by playing songs not usually attempted on the local circuit. Blues greats like Black Velvet, Superstition and Wagon Wheel enthralled patrons but when Cyndi finished with the cup song performed solo on a table on center stage she brought the house down. Encores where demanded, however time didn’t permit. This was the second year in a row that Cyndi, who is just 14 years old, was invited to perform and she didn’t disappoint.
