The Voice from Kilimanjaro seeks to heal Africa with music and dance

THE Voice from Kilimanjaro, an anti-xenophobia play penned and directed by arts activist, community leader and politician Vusi Mhlongo, who has starred on TV (Muvhango) and produced documentaries dealing with issues of conflict, identity and people’s roots for SABC TV, is showing at Durban’s Playhouse Drama Theatre until Sunday, 25 June 2017.

At the opening night on Thursday, 22 June, the audience was wowed by the fantastic assembly of energetic and multi-talented performers. Backed by a live band of musicians using both traditional and western musical influences, the stage performance manages to deliver a powerful anti-xenophobic message in an entertaining and informative way.

The performance takes the audience on an emotional and interesting ride, grappling with issues of family, love, identity and the lived experience of various people in post-apartheid South Africa. As writer and director, Mhlongo explained to be audience before the beginning of the opening night, “first we need to build a better Africa, and that will lead to a better world”.

Tickets are R70 from Computicket or at the theatre entrance. The show continues with 7:30pm evening performances until its closing on Sunday evening. Saturday, June 24 will be a double showing with a 2 pm matinee show in addition to the evening performance.
