Cops talk GBV ahead of campaign

The Dawn Park police will host more GBV campaigns along with various organisations.

The Dawn Park police held a door-to-door GBV awareness campaign along with other organisations in Somalia Park informal settlement on November 10 in an effort to bring awareness to the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which begins on November 25.

The police spokesperson, Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabulsa, said they reached out to more than 1 000 community members and also distributed 1 200 anti-GBV pamphlets.

“We chose the area because we wanted to educate the community about the ever-expanding scourge of GBV.

“It’s important for people to be aware of GBV because they will then know what is happening if they are experiencing it,” Mabula explained.

She said that as the police they have planned to work with various stakeholders to raise awareness about the plague of GBV.

“It’s important for people to know that this issue not only affects women. Men can also experience it.

“The campaigns we are hosting against this problem are essential for all the involved parties because they get a chance to show their commitment in combating the societal issue by providing vital information to the communities,” Mabula said.

She said they are taking this opportunity to demonstrate that GBV is something that won’t be tolerated by any organisations.
“During our drive, we advised community members to be vigilant of any form of the plague taking place in their area.

“If they notice anything like this happening they must report it to the police or relevant organisations.”

She added that community members should familiarise themselves with such organisations.
