WATCH: Villa Liza community demands justice for murdered mom (27)

Her body was discovered on April 28 near a local tavern under unclear circumstances.

Cries for justice echoed through the streets  on May 3, as the community of Villa Liza took to the streets in protest, demanding answers following the death of 27-year-old Dimakatso Mofokeng.

Her body was discovered on April 28 near a local tavern.

The protest began in Villa Liza, with scores of residents marching through Windmill Park to the Dawn Park Police Station, where community leaders delivered a memorandum and voiced their frustrations with law enforcement.
Many held signs bearing Mofokeng’s name, chanting for justice and accountability.

The march was supported by local activists, community members and representatives of the ANC Women’s League.

“We are here because Dimakatso’s life mattered,” said Thuli Nkosi, ANC Women’s League representative for Ward 99.

“She was found dead near a tavern and yet there has been no visible action. We are calling for justice and we want the police station to take responsibility and protect us, especially as women and mothers.”

Residents say Mofokeng’s death is the latest in a disturbing pattern of violence in the area.

According to protestors, at least two other victims were murdered in similar circumstances near the same area and in both cases, they claim the police failed to act decisively.

“We do not see what the police are doing. It is hurting us. We are tired of living in fear.”

ANC Women’s League together with the community of Vila Liza gathered to march for justice.

Mofokeng, a mother of two young children aged one and six, was described by her family as a kind, respectful and loving person with a bright future.

Her untimely death has devastated her loved ones, particularly grandmother.

“We are shattered. She was our light. We need to know who did this to her. She didn’t deserve to die like that.”
Dimakatso’s grandmother, who helped raise her, also spoke out through tears.

“We are broken. She was like my own daughter. She was humble and full of dreams. Now we are left with two small children who keep asking for their mother.

“We don’t know what to say to them. We need justice not just for Dimakatso, but for her children.”

A spokesperson for the Dawn Park police, Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula said an inquest docket has been opened.

“The police were alerted to the scene by a passerby who found her near a tavern. There were no visible physical injuries. It is believed that she had attended a wedding before her death.”

Mabula added that investigations are underway.
