Police seize mining gear, arrest 6
Those arrested were scheduled to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on July 10.
An intelligence-driven operation by the Boksburg SAPS saw the seizure of substantial illegal mining equipment from the violent-crime-plagued Angelo informal settlement on July 7.
The blitz, which aimed to destabilise and disrupt illegal mining, yielded six arrests (all illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries) believed to be part of the activities.
Seized from the illegal gold mining operators, commonly known as zama zamas, were phendukas, gas bottles, generators and soil-crushing machines.
According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba, the operation is part of their co-ordinated effort to combat illegal mining and other associated criminal activities in the precinct.
Those arrested were scheduled to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on July 10.
They all face charges of illegal mining and violating immigration laws.
