SAPS arrest suspect after fatal CIT robbery

Residents were shocked after a cash-in-transit robbery in Dawn Park left two bystanders dead, and police confirmed that one suspect was arrested.

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Barry Marais Road in the Dawn Park policing precinct yesterday afternoon (September 1).

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, members of the Gauteng Highway Patrol, working with the EMPD, acted swiftly on information received from Crime Intelligence and apprehended the suspect at a safe house in Rondebult.

“The team also recovered a rifle, five magazines with ammunition, a few stained banknotes and two vehicles – a silver Mercedes-Benz and a BMW – believed to have been used during the commission of the crime,” said Nevhuhulwi.

As previously reported, the incident began when a cash van was rammed from behind by a silver Mercedes-Benz, causing the vehicle to overturn onto a Quantum minibus taxi carrying seven passengers.

“Five passengers sustained injuries and received medical attention, while the other two escaped unharmed,” Nevhuhulwi said at the time.

About eight suspects were involved in bombing the cash van and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

A shootout ensued between the suspects and members of a nearby security company responding to the scene. Two bystanders were caught in the crossfire and declared dead on the scene.

Police are still searching for the remaining suspects. Investigations are ongoing.

Nevhuhulwi reminded the community to remain alert and report any suspicious or criminal activity to the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111.
