Second suspect arrested after fatal CIT robbery in Dawn Park

Residents were left stunned following a cash-in-transit robbery in Dawn Park that resulted in the deaths of two bystanders, with police confirming the arrest of one suspect.

Police have confirmed that another suspect has been arrested in connection with the cash-in-transit heist on Barry Marais Road in Dawn Park on September 1.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the suspect was arrested in the early hours of September 3. He was scheduled to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on September 4 on charges of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and having unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Another suspect, identified as Kgomotso Zitha, was arrested on the day of the incident.

“He has already appeared in court facing charges of possessing a hijacked motor vehicle and an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. His case has been postponed to September 10 for a formal bail application,” said Mogale.

Mogale added that during the arrests, the police officers recovered two vehicles – a white BMW, confirmed to have been hijacked in Randfontein in June, and a grey Mercedes-Benz, found to be clear on the system.

Police previously said they also recovered a rifle, five magazines with ammunition, and stained banknotes.

The Boksburg Advertiser previously reported that the heist unfolded when a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed a cash van from behind, causing the vehicle to overturn onto a Quantum minibus taxi carrying seven passengers.

“Five passengers sustained injuries and received medical attention, while the other two escaped unharmed,” Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said at the time.

About eight suspects were involved in bombing the cash van and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

A shootout ensued between the suspects and members of a nearby security company responding to the scene. Two bystanders were caught in the crossfire and declared dead at the scene.
