United fall out at quarter final stage
Brakpan’s United Cricket Club’s Premier XI fell out of the Eastern Cricket Club T20 competition in the quarter final stage on Sunday, January 29.
The team advanced to the quarter finals after defeating Kempton Park Cricket Club’s Promotion XI in a Group C decider in Alberton on Saturday, January 28.
In that match the team, after losing the toss, restricted their opponents to a mere 72/8 in their 20-over batting innings.
Kevin Hinton (2/12 in three overs), Dylan Rayner (2/13 in three overs) and Branden Grutter (2/7 in four overs) were clinical with the ball.
United then chased down Kempton’s low score in 9.2 overs.
Grutter (30 runs off 19 deliveries) and Rian van der Merwe (24 runs, also off 19 balls) were the top-scorers with the bat.
In the quarter final on Sunday, at Boksburg Cricket Club’s Prince George Park, United were pitted against Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s Premier XI.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, in a match reduced to 15 overs each way, United notched up 103/5 at a run-rate of 6.94.
Grutter scored 36 runs off 29 balls and Rayner scored 37 runs from 32 deliveries.
They could not, however, stop Northerns from chasing down the score in 11.1 overs and missed out on a semi-final spot against Alberton Cricket Club in the afternoon.
Benoni Northerns and Kempton Park’s Premier side qualified for the final at Sahara Park Willowmoore on Wednesday night (February 1).
The team now turns their attention to the second half of fixtures of the 50-over Eastern Premier League, which commences on Sunday, February 5.
They will return to the Lindeque Oval to play Alberton in the league.
