Every year since 2013, the DSTV iRock Music Festival has been a Mecca of sorts for hip-hop and House music lovers in Limpopo.

And this year, fans got more than their money’s worth. The festival kick-started on Thursday with a comedy showcase featuring funnyman TolAssMo and other local acts.

Friday’s pre-party, featuring Durban kwaito and gqom sensation Babes Wodumo as the headline act, was a great disappointment to fans, as the 22-year-old hitmaker was a no-show.

Another interesting tidbit was when internationally acclaimed House DJ Black Coffee slapped rapper AKA’s road manager, Tshiamo Letshwene, across the face on the main stage in front of thousands of fans.

According to a source who was on stage at the time, an argument had emerged about AKA and his band arriving two hours later than the 10pm time he was booked to perform at.

This inconvenience was met with great intolerance from Black Coffee, who was punctual for his set. In the video, Letshwene’s cap flies off as the klap happens.

Having been humiliated, Letshwene notified the hip-hop artist of his encounter, prompting action from AKA who was blocked by security during his attempt to confront Black Coffee, who was already 20 minutes into his set.

Later in the evening, Metro FM Music award-winner Senzo “Kwesta” Vilakazi was implicated in some “groupie” drama. A young lady from Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, claimed to have been ditched by the rapper – booked to perform on Saturday – and his entourage at the Meropa Town Lodge Hotel in Polokwane.

The 23-year-old, without accommodation, was later taken to the hotel’s back office, where she spent the night in an office chair. –
