A Christmas treat, with a special star

By Genevieve Vieira

It is really something special to see a Prima Ballerina crowned. Honoured for her 20 years in the business, Silvius was brought to tears as past dance partners and teachers handed over several flower bouquets, filling the stage.

Silvius had just completed dancing her heart out in the show, demonstrating her dedication, enthusiasm and skill. And even after the physical demands of the show, Silvius still stood poised and elegant, offering a curtsy to each new person who stepped out to honour her.

Silvius plays the roles of Louise, the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker, with it’s elaborate costumes and majestic stage design, remains a treat for the whole family, and Joburg Ballet pulls it off exquisitely.

In the opening scene Mr (Santos) and Mrs Stahlbaum (Sanmarie Kreuzhuber) are hosting their annual Christmas party. The children wait in anticipation for their gifts. The children receive their gifts and Dr Drosselmeyer, known for his magical ways, brings the Christmas Tree Fairy to life.

The living dolls are a delight, and the mischievous mice even more so. Jumping around the stage, with their evil grins, they are proof that ballet doesn’t always have to look graceful in order to be entertaining. Back by popular demand, The Nutcracker once again takes ballet lovers into the festive season.
