Celebrities’ risky approach to their outfits at last year’s Cannes Film Festival might be the reason the French festival has introduced new rules prohibiting any nudity on the red carpet.
“For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other areas of the festival,” the festival organisers wrote on their website.
“Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre, are not permitted. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules,” the statement read.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival starts today and will run for over a week, until May 24.

Celebrities have always taken risks and made sure they kept people talking about their outfits long after they walked the red carpet.
However, the rich and famous have recently found creative ways of pushing the limits. Earlier this year, Bianca Censori arrived at the Grammys with her husband, Kanye West.
The Australian architect arrived at the award ceremony wearing a black coat, which she removed to reveal a dress that left little to the imagination.
Last year, a handful of actors and other celebrities who attended the 77th edition of the festival pushed the envelope with their outfits, which could have forced the festival to introduce the ‘no-nudity’ rule for this year’s edition.

Last year, 28-year-old US model Bella Hadid wore a brown bodycon midi dress made from a see-through fabric that showed her bosom.
Hadid’s frock was part of Saint Laurent’s fall 2024 runway show.
Russian model Natasha Poly’s long-sleeved, black gown with a subtle, almost invisible pattern was also a talking point at the previous Cannes Film Festival.
While a parent might cringe at the sight of the dress if next to their children, many in the fashion world found the look to be elegant and chic.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion’s outfit at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party was in an outfit that had people talking.
The green, figure-hugging gown with feather details and a daringly open chest showed Megan’s matching nipple pasties.
Like Censori’s outfit earlier this year, Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson also left little to the imagination with her outfit at the Stella McCartney Fall RTW 2025 fashion show.
