DJ Citi Lyts has died after being shot eight times

The hip-hop fraternity is mourning after DJ Citi Lyts, the younger brother of the late hip-hop artist ProKid has passed away.

Sandile Mkhize, popularly known as DJ Citi Lyts, has tragically passed away after an alleged hijacking incident in Soweto on Sunday.

Sandile was the brother of the late hip-hop artist Pro Kid (real name Linda Mkhize). News broke on Twitter from the hip-hop fraternity and reports suggested that the DJ was killed after he was shot eight times during a hijacking in Johannesburg.

Citi Lyts was known for his hits Washa, Vura and Malambane. Collaborating with many rappers and artists such Fifi Cooper, Emtee, Sjava and Blaq Diamond.

Many artists sent their condolences to DJ Citi Lyts’ family, including the likes of Slikour, Riky Rick and DJ Clive.

Riky Rick posted: “Our brother Citi Lyts is gone forever.”

Singer-songwriter Donald wrote: “RIP Citi Lyts, one of the realest brothers I ever met. This one hurts really deep. Till we meet again my G.”

Citi Lyts brother was well-known rapper ProKid who passed away in 2018 after suffering a seizure. He was only 37 years old.

ProKid was lauded as a major contributor to the South African hip-hop scene through hits such as Woz’uzobabona, Sekele and Wild West Through. He is also celebrated for promoting African languages in his music when it was not fashionable to do so.

The loss of his brother reportedly weighed heavy on Citi Lyts, who apparently went on a downward path after his death but managed over the years to get himself back up.

Just like his brother, Citi Lyts helped push and grow local hip-hop, such as organising talent search competitions for up-and-coming artists in the hip-hop, Amapiano and Afro Trap genres. The lucky winner got the chance to work with the DJ and record a music video for their single.
