This week belongs to Khuli Chana

Today Motswako rapper Khuli Chana's arrived at the MTV Africa Awards launch with a definite skip in his step.

Posing for pictures with Wololo-hitmaker Bongekile Simelane, there was a genuine smile on the rapper’s face. And it’s easy to see why. He is back, with one hell of a bang.

The long-awaited doccie Picking Up The Pieces: The Khuli Chana Story is set to debut at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas later this week, and he’s on the cusp of releasing a new album.

The feature-length documentary promises to finally give insight into 2013. Three years ago Khuli Chana won big at the SAMAs, his music dominated radio, and he became one of SA’s most loved personalities – but then it all came to a halt when the he was involved in a mistaken identity shooting. What followed was a legal battle with the South African Police Service (SAPS) – and him picking up the pieces of his life after his near-death incident.

The film explores his life, how the incident helped him reconnect with his family, why he took a musical break – but most importantly, the film will introduce South Africa to those closest to him.

Also, expect interviews with colleagues, lawyers and insight into the Chana vs SAPS saga that captured the imagination of South Africa.

That said, this year seems to have marked a creative resurgence from Chana (real name Khulane Morule). Last December he released his latest single Respek. Not only did this renew interest in his work, it also came just as he clinched a deal with Absolut Vodka, who will be releasing an exclusive screen-printed Khuli Chana Signature Edition Bottle.

Absolut will also be releasing his upcoming concept album #OneSource as well as a doccie series. Well done for picking up the pieces.
