Nine suspects spent weekend behind bars

Nine suspects spent their weekend inside police cells at Zonkizizwe Police Station.

During the weekend of March 1 to March 3, nine suspects were arrested for various offences as the Buya Mtheto Operations swept the streets in Zonkizizwe.

Corporate communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS, Sgt Rufus Tema, said: “In one incident at Magagula Heights on March 3 at about 9pm, two suspects, aged between 27 and 41, were arrested for house-breaking and theft, and possession of property presumed to be stolen.”

The 39-year-old complainant in the above-mentioned case told the police that he was asleep when he was woken by a loud bang on his house window.

He said before he could establish what was happening, five suspects had already entered the house and started to beat him.

“The suspect, as alleged by the complainant, accused him of stealing their speakers and demanded them back. His appeal for innocence apparently fell on deaf ears as they dragged him out of the house into the boot of their car outside. As they drove away, the community members were already on the alert. They cornered the suspects and managed to arrest two of them while the other three ran away. An amplifier, which was stolen during the house-breaking, has been recovered on the scene,” said Tema.

The other three suspects are still at large and the Zonkizizwe police appeal to the Magagula Heights community to help in the tracing and ultimate arrest of these suspects.

Anyone with information which could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects can come forward or dial 0800 10111.
