Bertha Gxowa Hospital nurse gets a prestigious award

“She embodies the spirit of nursing, going above and beyond to care for patients, even conducting home visits after hours."

Sr Brenda Shilubane, a dedicated nurse from Bertha Gxowa Gateway Clinic in Germiston, has been awarded the esteemed Cecilia Makiwane Award for excellence in nursing.

The accolade, presented by the South African Nursing Council (SANC), recognises exceptional contributions to patient care and community health.

The award, named after Cecilia Makiwane, South Africa’s first black registered professional nurse, was conferred during a prestigious ceremony held on November 8 in Menlyn, Pretoria.

Shilubane was among 77 nominees, highlighting the competitive nature of the recognition.

Reflecting on the honour, Shilubane expressed gratitude, saying, “It’s fulfilling to know the people I serve appreciate my efforts. Nursing isn’t about recognition; it’s about making a difference where it matters most.”

Shilubane’s journey in nursing began in 2009 when she enrolled as a nurse. Over the years, she gained qualifications in community health, psychiatry, midwifery, and primary healthcare, earning a Bachelor of Nursing in Education and Management from the University of South Africa in 2022.

She transitioned to Bertha Gxowa Gateway Clinic in January 2023 as a quality assurance nurse, where she focuses on maintaining high standards of patient care and implementing quality protocols to improve healthcare services.

Her commitment to nursing extends beyond clinical care. While at Merry Moodley Clinic, she led adolescent youth-friendly services, organising impactful events for Youth Day and conducting home visits to ensure patient care.

Her nomination came from Sr Thandi Nkosi, who described Shilubane as a beacon of hope and healing.

“She embodies the spirit of nursing, going above and beyond to care for patients, even conducting home visits after hours. Her leadership inspired staff and left a lasting impact on the community,” said Nkosi.

Ekurhuleni Health District communication officer Thobeka Makhubela lauded Shilubane’s contributions, stating, “Her achievements are a source of pride for Ekurhuleni and South Africa’s healthcare sector. She embodies resilience, compassion, and excellence in nursing.”
