Local karate star shines on national and international stage

Duduzile Tibane: From fitness journey to world karate podiums.

What began as a simple quest to stay fit has taken Duduzile Tibane across borders and onto the world stage.

The 26-year-old Katlehong-born rising karateka is redefining what is possible through discipline, perseverance and faith. A proud SA karate athlete, Tibane’s journey reflects how purpose-driven commitment can transform an ordinary goal into an extraordinary calling.

Her introduction to karate was purely for fitness. That goal remains, but it has evolved into something far deeper.

“Karate taught me that fitness is more than just showing up to train. It requires commitment, discipline in diet, a transformed mindset and a clear purpose. All of that influences consistency,” she explains.

As a kumite (fighting) and kata specialist, Tibane holds a second green belt. She entered her first tournament in 2023, competing under the African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO). However, her participation in the KAN National Tournament marked a major turning point.

“That tournament was the main one that earned me a spot to be selected for the world championship,” she says.

“It came with many challenges, but my consistent performances in other tournaments helped secure that opportunity.”

She credits much of her success to her coach, shihan James Sithole and all the sensei’s of the Sijabulile Dojo, where she trains.

In less than two years of committing to competitive karate, Tibane rose to dominate the women’s U65kg category nationally. She earned the title of SA champion and secured two world championship selections in 2025.

Representing SA at the Kyokushinkan World Championship 2025 was a defining moment in her career. Competing against elite fighters from around the globe, Tibane delivered outstanding performances and earned a bronze medal in the U55kg category.

Despite her success, Tibane is grounded and self-critical.

“I always study my competition videos and see room for improvement. As the year rolls in fully, I need to improve and gain more experience by training and competing with other experienced SA women.”

Beyond karate, Tibane continues to raise the bar academically. Born into a family of seven, she aspires to pursue her Master’s degree, having already obtained an Honours degree in business management and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Her siblings have also excelled academically, qualifying in accounting, education and mechanical engineering.

Another defining moment came at the prestigious Champ of Champions Open Weight Tournament, where there are only two categories, women and men, with no weight divisions. Tibane competed against opponents weighing up to 72kg while she weighed just 57kg.

“This tournament tested my courage, skill, and spirit. It was an honour to fight alongside and against some of the most technical women in the country,” she says.

Sharing the tatami with some elite athletes proved a valuable learning experience.

Her talent caught the attention of Shihan Simphiwe Dlulane, a Kyokushin-Kan SA representative, who commended her performances in a video that has since circulated on social media.

Tibane describes him as a leader who does not tolerate mediocrity and as one of the greatest fighters and martial artists globally, recognised for his skill, leadership and achievements.

The Open Weight Champ of Champions Tournament, developed by Dlulane, took place in March. Together with other leaders in the organisation, champions across the Kyokushin-Kan were identified and invited to compete in this event.
