Community warned on bogus practices

Beware off bogus practices.

The Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthambi, has warned the public about bogus training centres which claim to offer short courses on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) set top-box installation.

DTT refers to the broadcasting of terrestrial television in a digital format. Terrestrial broadcasting in South Africa is currently in an analogue format.

In analogue, one channel uses a dedicated frequency to broadcast and in digital, the signal is compressed allowing for more channels to be broadcast in the same bandwidth as one analogue channel uses.

In the last few weeks the Department of Communications has been flooded with calls from people wanting to verify the legality of these institutions.

The minister has called on people to refrain from attending courses offered by these institutions as they are operating illegally and have no accreditation.

“As the department, we are yet to make an official announcement on which centres will be accredited to offer such courses,” warns the minister.

She also said her department is working closely with the Department of Labour to design an accredited course for DTT installers. Once the course content is finalised, they will communicate through various community and main stream media about where interested individuals can go to undertake such training.

Meanwhile, South African Airways has warned of a recruitment scam inviting interested parties to apply for enrolment to be trained as cabin crew staff with the airline.

There is communication circulating on social media and distributed on other channels suggesting SAA is looking for 500 candidates with a matric qualification to be trained as cabin crew. According to SAA spokesman Mr Tlali Tlali, the airline has distanced itself from these adverts as they mislead the public and has the potential to create confusion among SAA employees.

“The reality is that SAA has put an employment freeze in place as the airline is currently undergoing headcount rationalisation to bring the number of staff to sustainable levels in an effort to make the company financially sustainable,”said Tlali.
