A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in an open field at Nyebe, Ermelo on Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson for Ermelo, Captain Carla Prinsloo said a 14-year-old girl was walking through the field when she heard a baby crying. She investigated and found the newborn baby with the placenta still attached, wrapped in a white coloured night gown.
The young girl alerted community members and police who summoned an ambulance as the baby was not in a stable condition.
The baby was stabilised on the scene and transported to hospital.
Police are investigating a case of child negligence.
Anyone who can assist police in tracing the child’s natural mother is asked to contact the investigating officer Sgt S.P. Mkwanazi of the Family Violence and Child Protection Services Unit (FCS) at 072 638 1652.
In a similar case, on 20 January this year, a newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a shack in Extension 34, south of Ermelo. Police are still trying to trace the child’s mother.
As in the previous case, Sgt Mkwanazi can be contacted with information.
