Use water sparingly

Municipal spokesman, Mr Mandla Zwane said the municipality urges the public to use water wisely and sparingly due to the decline in dam levels and the low rainfall.

Msukaligwa Local Municipality has cautioned the public to use water sparingly as the country continues to deal with the effects of drought.

Municipal spokesman, Mr Mandla Zwane said the municipality urges the public to use water wisely and sparingly due to the decline in dam levels and the low rainfall.

According to Mr Zwane, Douglas Dam is currently at 62 per cent, Brummer Dam at 26 per cent, Torbanite Dam at 10 per cent and Jericho Dam at 85 per cent.

Ermelo and Wesselton receive water through the Usuthu Scheme (Jericho Dam) which supplies 14 megalitres per day to both the northern and southern water treatment plant.

The supply is 10 megalitres per day short of the normal 24 megalitres per day, which means the demand exceeds the supply.

“The municipality appeals to the entire community of Msukaligwa to play their part by using the now scarce, yet precious commodity sparingly,”said Mr Zwane.

He also shared some useful water saving tips that members of the community can consider.

  • Do not irrigate gardens or wash cars using hosepipes, turn off the water while soaping hands and brushing teeth.
  • Other tips include taking shorter showers of five minutes or less and never pouring water down the drain when there may be another use for it, such as watering plants or for cleaning.

Mr Zwane also requested members of the community to report water leakages to the municipal call centre on 017 801 3500/3004.
