Phase one of renovating and rebuilding Lindile Secondary School in Wesselton is nearly complete

The school introduced a catch-up programme to get the learners up to date with the school curriculum.

Phase one of rebuilding, renovating and altering the state of Lindile Secondary School is set to be completed this week.

As reported recently by the Highvelder, the Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) released money for the project after numerous calls for assistance at the school. Teachers stopped working in March, because they feared for their health and safety and those of the learners.

The school building was in a dilapidated state, with sewage running on the school grounds from a sewerage plant on the premises.

A march led by the SACP, saw the community of Wesselton come together in support of the learners, teachers and parents.

Learners missed three weeks of school, but returned after promises were made by the DoE and the municipality.

When the Highvelder visited the school on 19 July, a contractor on site was doing renovations.

Phase one consisted of the renovation of various buildings, including Blocks C and D.

This block has been refurbished with a new roof, ceilings and floors which the Grade 8 and 9 classes will enjoy as a safe environment for learning.

The school’s toilets also got a much needed face lift.

The kitchen, which was closed down during the protest action due to fears of contamination as the sewage was flowing near the doors, got a new coat of paint.

The contractor added wash basins on the outside wall of the kitchen, with an outside cafeteria planned for the front of the kitchen where learners can enjoy their lunch.

The ceiling in the school library was fixed and new lights were installed.

General work will also be done on site and electrical installations will be installed in various classrooms.

The contractor was also tasked with fixing the sewage coming from a nearby pump situated on the premises of the school.

Classrooms at Lindile Secondary School received a fresh new coat of paint and ceilings, lighting and floors were installed in phase one of the renovation of the school.

He installed a pipe running through the school to curb the blocking of the sewage pump.

The school hall was revamped with the assembly point set to be moved near it and the contractor is laying paving.

It is a welcome relief for teachers, learners, parents and the community of Wesselton as the dilapidation of the history-laden school was a sore point.

The sewage pump at Lindile Secondary School will no longer be blocked. The contractor was tasked to install pipes to fix the blockage issue.

The school introduced a catch-up programme to get the learners up to date with the school curriculum and teachers of subjects such as mathematics and science are presenting morning and weekend classes.

With phase one nearly completed, phase two will begin once all relevant documents have been signed off.

Reports indicate the same contractor will carry out phase two.

The DoE allocated an estimated R9-million for the complete renovation of the school.
