Easter fatalities in Mpumalanga drop by 77%

“Motorist should not only drive well and obey the rules when they see the traffic officers,” she concluded.

Mpumalanga Traffic Officers have stopped about 18 000 vehicles from 2 April to 13 April.

They arrested about 14 motorists for various offences including excessive speeding and failure to produce valid documentation among others.

Roadblocks are placed on roads that link Mpumalanga with Limpopo, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Kingdom of eSwatini and Mozambique.

These operations are supported by the police and members of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).

According to Mpumalanga MEC for Community, Safety, Security and Liason, Ms Gabisile Shabalala, the number of fatalities in Mpumalanga during the Easter holiday has dropped by 77%.

This year seven people died, while 31 people died during Easter weekend last year.

Mpumalanga recorded six fatal crashes as compared to last year’s 25.

Ms Shabalala said: “Any life lost or injury sustained on the road is one too many.”

She added that it remains the government’s goal to eradicate road accidents.

“Motorist should not only drive well and obey the rules when they see the traffic officers,” she concluded.
