Safety concerns over traffic sign vandalism in Ermelo emerge

The removal of stop signs has impacted some intersections, and reports of cable theft have started to surface again.

ERMELO – Residents and motorists have raised concerns over safety issues following reports of vandalism and theft in the area.

Some intersections have been affected by the removal of stop signs, while cable theft reports have also resurfaced.

This was noticed at Jacobz Street crossing over Kleinhans’ two-way stop intersection towards Border Street, and at the corner of Tom Muller and Van Zyl Streets.

According to Theo Craven of the South African Community Crime Watch, the sign removals seem to be acts of vandalism by people with too much time on their hands. Craven said he has alerted the appropriate authorities to address the issue.

“The absence of stop signs poses a significant safety risk for motorists and pedestrians, particularly during busy traffic periods. Residents are urged to exercise caution while driving through intersections without any traffic signs,” Craven urged.

A resident indicated that the signs were seen on a sidewalk near TWK Insurance.

According to Craven, the authorities were informed thereof and they were reinstalled.
