Man gets 20 years for strangling sex worker

Botha had picked Sibiya, a sex worker, up in Belfast and took her to his house.

BREYTEN – The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court, sitting in Breyten on February 13, sentenced Jacques Jacobus Alwyn Botha (33) to 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder of the 39-year-old Zodwa Angelina Sibiya.

The murder occurred on a farm in Vogelspruitspoort near Belfast on October 18, 2024.

The court heard details of the incident.

Botha had picked Sibiya, a sex worker, up in Belfast and took her to his house.

After sharing some drinks and having sex, Sibiya is said to have been intoxicated.

She began to make some noise in the house, which irritated Botha.

Despite repeated attempts to quell her disturbance, Sibiya’s behaviour persisted, leading to Botha forcibly taking her to a bedroom, where he strangled her to death with his hands and with her underwear.

Botha wrapped Sibiya’s body in a carpet, dumped it in a hole not far from his house and covered it with stones to conceal it.

Overwhelmed by guilt, he surrendered himself to the Belfast police, confessing to the murder.
