Chrissiesmeer–Carolina road to reopen after bridge reconstruction
The Chrissiesmeer–Carolina road will officially reopen after months of closure due to a collapsed bridge, restoring vital community access.
CHRISSIESMEER – The P177 route linking Carolina and Chrissiesmeer, which was closed after the collapse of a bridge during torrential rainfall on 29 December 2024, will officially reopen today, 29 September, at 14:00.
Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mr Thulasizwe Thomo, will officiate the reopening ceremony following the completion of the reconstruction project.

The corrugated culvert bridge that gave way in December posed serious safety risks, forcing the closure of the road for several months and impacting residents, farmers, businesses, and daily commuters in the area.

The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport said it prioritised the reconstruction to restore safe and reliable connectivity.
MEC Thomo expressed his appreciation to the public for their patience during the construction period:
“The reopening of this road will ease movement for residents, farmers, and businesses. It will also support economic activity in the Gert Sibande District, where reliable infrastructure is essential for growth and development.”
With the reopening set for today, motorists will once again be able to travel on the P177 between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer, marking the restoration of a vital transport link in the region.
