New Ermelo Primary School celebrates International Literacy Day
New Ermelo Primary School deputy principal, Motshele Daddly Makitla motivated the pupils to work extra hard in their academics.
ERMELO – International Literacy Day is observed worldwide as a way of reminding people, especially learners, about the importance of knowing how to read and improving their reading skills.
According to Statistics South Africa in 2021, close to 3% of 15- and nearly 9% of 17-year-olds dropped out of school.
New Ermelo Primary believes, however, that through such programmes, schools can be given the opportunity to ensure they transform literacy learning to benefit of learners.
The day, which was organised by the library committee and the school’s deputy principal, Motshele Daddly Makitla, saw learners from grades three to four present reading items in both English and isiZulu on the stage, while pupils from grades five and six served as programme directors.
Learners were also encouraged to work extra hard in class to achieve their future goals.
“We congratulate and encourage all learners to read as much as possible. and to revive reading as we commemorate our International Literacy Day. We want to remind them that the ability to improve their lives is in their hands,” Makitla said.
