ERMELO – For four decades, the sound of a school bell ringing has been more than just a signal for the start of class – it has been the heartbeat of Sandrie Marais’s daily rhythm.
After 40 years of inspiring students and guiding young minds, Marais rang the bell for the last time as a teacher during Netherland Park Secondary School’s (NPSS) bell ceremony.
She grew up in Senekal and completed her high schooling at Paul Erasmus Secondary School in 1977. In 1978, she studied at the University of the
Free State and obtained her degree in BSc home economics
in 1982.
Marais began het teaching career at Wessel Maree High School in Odendaalsrus and taught home economics.
In 2016, she joined NPSS where she taught the first group of Grade 12 learners computer application technology (CAT).
She later taught the Grade 11s CAT and has lately taught it to Grade 10s.
“Since I was a little girl, I wanted to become a teacher and played school-school with my sisters. I love it to teach learners new things and see how they grow as a person to become successful in life,” Marais said.
The highlight of her career was to see her first group obtaining a 100% pass rate in CAT.
In 2019 she received a certificate for the most distinctions in CAT in the Gert Sibande region.
