GS College hosts sports day
Gert Sibande FET College, Ermelo campus recently hosted an inter-campus athletics day at AJ Swanepoel Stadium. The college’s six campuses, Ermelo, Standerton, Sibanesetfu, Balfour, Evander and Piet Retief (skills academy), competed for the coveted Best Campus trophy. All campuses participated in field and track events with Ermelo ultimately crowned the overall winners with 148 medals. Sibanesetfu came second with 137 medals and third placed was Standerton campus with 82 medals. Standerton campus also won the Best Spectators trophy after convincing the judges with their dance moves during the campus dance competition. The events also saw last year’s champions break their own records. Malcom Matiwane broke his record of 10,57sec in the 100m with 10,53sec this year; Sandile Nhlapho broke last year’s time of 10,59sec in the 100m U/21 with a finish in 10,55sec; and Sibusiso “Jaman” Mchunu improved last year’s 56sec in the 400m to 49sec. Most of the athletes credited their improved performance to their head coach, Andile Dlamini. The crowd screamed at the top of their voices when Sesh Cash, a student at the Ermelo campus, performed one of his songs from his latest album, the hit track titled GS. Evander campus collected 69 medals, Balfour 21 and Piet Retief (skills academy) nine medals.
