LS keeper was unlucky as he fumbled a tame Bongane Methula ground shot into the net

Ermelo Mega Stars (MS) FC, placed 15th, outshone 11th placed Losta Stars (LS) from Piet Retief in their 3-1 Gert Sibande Football Association League encounter at the Swanepoel Stadium last Sunday.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first 10 minutes, until an MS direct free kick was parried by LS keeper, Sphelo Mncube. Another scoring opportunity for MS went wasted in the 17th minute, when another free kick missed the players’ heads and went just above the goal posts.

Despite the near misses by MS, the opposition enjoyed more ball possession. MS Bongani Methula set up a beautiful through pass to oncoming captain, Goodwill Ngwenya, and was brought down in the box by an LS defender, resulting in a penalty in the 25th minute. Thabiso Dladla calmly scored from the spot, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

LS tried to come back into the game, as they started connecting passes on the right flank with a real chance at goal coming in the 37th minute with Nkululeko Nkosi shooting wide.

In the 41st minute, MS Goodwill Ngwenya was cautioned for pushing an LS player in the box. Bongane Methula earned himself a yellow card after pulling an LS player.

Both teams struggled to connect a number of passes in the 46th minute, as most passes were either intercepted or bad passes were made with the first half ending 1-0 to MG.

The second half got off to a pacey start, as both teams started playing with more purpose. MS Thabiso Dladla was unlucky when he scored an own goal in the 51st minute.

MS captain’s header went wide from a cross, but he quickly made amends in the 58th minute when he placed the ball far post, beating the LS keeper and increasing the tally to 2-0.

MS Iven Thwala was given marching orders, being red-carded in the 60th minute, followed by a yellow card against Goodwill Thomo.
