The Gert Sibande Volleyball League (GSVL) and the Mpumalanga volleyball team (Buffaloes) hosted a two day volleyball revival tournament at the Ermelo Sport Inn during the weekend of 27 and 28 January.

The tournament was a curtain-raiser for the official GSVL league beginning in March and also an opportunity for the provincial team to prepare for the national volleyball league set to take place in Durban.

The aim was to revive volleyball as a sport and assess teams for the GSVL and teams went through vigorous group stages on the first day, trying to outscore their opponents in each match which consisted of five sets.

The Buffaloes, consisting of Ermelo-based Flamingos players, came out blazing, showing their class and schooling the other teams.

They went through the group stage with ease, beating Beatmasters in the semifinal.

Even though they tried, the other team could not handle their spikes.

In the women’s group, Beatmasters from KwaMhlanga won after defeating the USDF team in the final.

The women from across the border could not even register a set and lost 3 -0.

Despite lack of funding, tournament organiser, Mr Comfort Mavimbela, considered the tournament a success.

The GSVL will begin on 10 March with matches to be held at the Ermelo Sport Inn and the Secunda Sasol Club.
