Local teams register losses in the SAB Soccer League

Mafia FC succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hammers while Ermelo United allowed three goals into their net, going down 3-0 against Blackstone FC.

The SAB soccer league kicked off at various stadiums in the Gert Sibande District on Saturday, 15 September.

Old foes once again did battle, while new players relished the chance to face off against the big guns.

Ermelo’s contingent has grown in numbers with Mpumalanga Eagles Football Club from Camden joining the other four local teams that include Mafia FC, VOC United, Sun City Gunners and Ermelo United.

However, the local teams did not fare well with all five losing their matches.

VOC United kicked off at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Wesselton on Saturday and faced a Breyten United side that was chomping at the bit.

The locals were on their way to victory and scored two goals in the first half. However, the Breyten side returned with guns blazing and put three goals past the VOC goalkeeper. The match ended 3-2.

Mafia FC succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hammers, while Ermelo United allowed three goals into their net, going down 3-0 against Blackstone FC.

The debutants, Eagles FC, lost 1-0 to Flymingo FC and the Sun City Gunners could not hold off a rampant Breyten Home Sweepers side and lost 3-1.

After the weekend, Blackstone tops the log table, followed closely by Breyten Home Sweepers FC. Flymingo United rounds off the top three on the table with all three teams on six points and only being separated by a goal difference.

Two local teams are in the bottom three, with Ermelo United in 16th place.

Last year’s SAB league champions, Somhlolo United, follows closely behind, while Sun City Gunners languishes at the bottom with all three teams failing to register a point on the log table.

The beginning of the season brought action with the locals getting a rude awakening at the hands of their opposition and the next round of matches are set to take place at various stadiums in the district on the weekend of 22 September.
