Ermelo’s karate twins battle for gold at national championship

Twin brothers from Ermelo deliver an unforgettable performance at national karate events, claiming gold and silver with fierce determination.

Ermelo Karate Academy’s dynamic duo, twin brothers Chibuzo and Chinedu Okpugo, recently faced off in a series of national championships.

They met each other on the mat this year in May during the Karate South Africa League One Championship in Bloemfontein.

Both brothers fought hard through the preliminary rounds, with Chibuzo clinching the bronze medal by narrowly outscoring Chinedu in their medal match.

In the weeks leading up to the SA Open Karate Championships, held on June 20 and 21 in Tongaat, the brothers had to balance intense training schedules with their high school examinations.

According to Eugene Smith, sensei of Ermelo Karate, “Every dojo session felt like a battlefield, with Chibuzo and Chinedu determined to outdo each other.”

During the SA Open, the brothers once again met on the mat – this time, competing for gold and silver after both fought their way through tough semi-finals.

In a fiercely contested match, Chinedu defeated Chibuzo 5-1, securing the top spot and leaving his brother with a well-earned silver medal.
