Verné Prinsloo becomes South African Muay Thai champion

Verné Prinsloo turns her passion into a purpose as she rises through South Africa’s competitive Muay Thai ranks.

What began as a casual interest in martial arts, has blossomed into a professional career for former local resident Verné Prinsloo, who, after years of contemplation, found her calling in the disciplined art of Muay Thai.

Muay Thai, also known as “the art of eight limbs,” involves punching, elbowing, knee strikes, and kicking.

“I’ve always wanted to try martial arts, but I never really knew which style to choose or what the differences were,” Prinsloo said.

She was raised in Ermelo and attended Laerskool JJ van der Merwe before she matriculated from Ligbron Academy of Technology.

After school Prinsloo went on to study chemical engineering at Stellenbosch University.

After graduating, she moved to Cape Town for her first job in 2021. With a bit more free time on her hands, she finally explored her curiosity.

The nearest gym specialised in Muay Thai, so she decided to give it a try.

Her first experience was an eye-opener.

“After just one trial session, I was hooked – even though I left covered in bruises just from holding pads.”

Within eight months, she was offered her first fight at Thaiholics Fight Promotion.
