Okpugo brothers to represent SA on global karate stage

The twins, Chibuzo and Chinedu Okpugo, from the Ermelo Karate Academy, will compete in the 2026 Karate One Youth League in Fujairah, UAE.

Two local brothers are proving that talent runs in the family after being selected to represent South Africa at one of the world’s most prestigious karate events.

The tournament, which takes place from February 12 to 15, brings together the very best young competitors from across the globe under the banner of the World Karate Federation.

Both brothers have become well-known names in the sport, competing for the Mpumalanga Karate Association and Karate South Africa (KSA).

Over the last two years, they have consistently finished on the podium at national and international levels.

Chibuzo has represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships, competed at continental championships under the Union of African Karate Federations, and currently holds the number one ranking in South Africa in the Elite Cadet Boys Kumite (U70kg, 14 to 15 years) division.

His journey has been marked by multiple national titles, KSA League victories and the honour of receiving official Protea Colours.

Chinedu has followed closely in his brother’s footsteps, also representing South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships and claiming several podium finishes at national and league events.

He is currently ranked third in South Africa in the Elite Cadet Boys Kumite (U70kg, 14 to 15 years) division and is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young fighters.

Their selection for the prestigious league in Fujairah is a major milestone in their karate careers and a proud moment for their family, dojo and the Ermelo sporting community.

The tournament offers them a rare opportunity to compete against the world’s top youth karate athletes and gain valuable international experience on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
