Festive football tournament keeps youth off the streets

By providing a competitive platform, the organisers aim to shield the youth from social ills while showcasing the immense talent in Msukaligwa.

The Mpumalanga Stadium in Ermelo was a hive of activity this past festive season as the annual Msukaligwa Soccer Spectacle took center stage from December 16 to 31.

Since the first tournament in 2018, it has grown into a vital community pillar.

It was founded by local soccer legends to combat the lack of recreational activities for youth during the December holidays – a time when many youngsters face the temptation of alcohol abuse or crime due to boredom.

This year’s edition held special significance as the organisers honoured Sammy Nhlapho, a former NPSL player, and Chief Ntombela for their dedicated roles in developing local soccer.

Success stories from this tournament include Simphiwe ‘Vempi’ Masilela, who recently signed for the Orlando Pirates reserve team, and Siphamandla Hleza, a former participant who famously won Man of the Match while playing for Milford FC against Kaizer Chiefs.

The daily matches, running from 10:00 to 17:00, were made possible through the contributions of community members who provided prize money, kits and awards.

For the past five years, the Msukaligwa Soccer Spectacle has proven that with community support, local sports can transform lives and give hope to the youth.
