Barren flagpoles have potential

A Durban councillor believes that flag poles could be used to create jobs and benefit the economy.

EDITOR – As a city councillor, one would hope that I can influence what goes on in our city. Not so. Suggestions made to officials and our political leadership seem to fall on deaf ears.

Some months ago I raised the idea that the phalanx of flag poles, around eThekwini, be used for advertising forthcoming events in the city. I did

this via email to some officials and by raising it in one of our council committee meetings.

It’s quite simple, and my idea is not new. Before the Soccer World Cup we had the flags of all the nations taking part flying on our flagpole clusters on major routes into the city. I proposed that we use these same flag poles to “publicise” all other events hosted by the city.

So for example, during the Wine Week all the wineries could put up their flags.

My suggestion has job creation and economic benefits, as we would charge for the advertising. Plus, it makes the city look more welcoming, rather than these sterile poles on the freeways. We are, after all, a tourist city.

Goodness gracious, we have joined the beaches Blue Flag scheme, why can’t we “flag” our other assets? What do other residents of the city think ?
