Petrol station attack linked to strike

The attack on a young man at a petrol station may be linked to the ongoing petrol attendants' strike.

A YOUNG man in his late twenties sustained severe head injuries in an altercation at a petrol station on Shepstone Road in New Germany on Tuesday 17 September at approximately 7.45am.

According to ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson, bystanders alleged that the young man is a petrol attendant in plain clothes who was heading home when the altercation ensued between himself and four assailants.

It is believed that the attack could be linked to the nationwide petrol attendants strike initiated on Monday 9 September.

“Paramedics were called to the scene to attend to the injured man, who’d suffered a severe head injury and was in a serious condition. According to bystanders the young man was hit in the head with a brick by one of his assailants,” added Jackson.

Jackson also reported that the victim was stabilised and taken to RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth.

According to Lt Bongumusa Manqele, Pinetown SAPS communications officer, the incident was not reported to the SAPS and no case has been opened.
