Tuck shop owners urged to be cautious

Crime statistics have shown that local tuck shops are being targeted and owners need to implement safety measures.

HILLCREST SAPS is urging people to be cautious as statistics have revealed that local tuck shops have become easy targets for criminals.

Lt France Mkhize, Hillcrest SAPS communications officer said, in most cases police have noticed that security measures have not been taken and this type of business attracts criminals.

“In one of the tuck shops, police noticed that it was built in an isolated location and was only operated by a young woman who in most cases is left alone.

“The building was not fenced, no alarm system was installed and there was no burglar guards on the doors or windows.

“The tuck shop operates from 6am until 7pm. When the victim was attacked, she was completely helpless as there were no neighbours nearby. Fortunately, she was not harmed.

We urge shop owners to play their role to help prevent their shops from being targeted,” said Mkhize.
