Little Red Hen collects 188 tins for needy families

Kloof Library's Just One Tin campaign will distribute the tins of food collected to needy families in the Highway area this Friday, 18 July on Mandela Day.

CHILDREN at Little Red Hen, a pre-primary school in Winston Park, Gillitts donated 188 tins of food and gave a R1000 donation which will be used to buy more tins for the Just One Tin campaign.

Jill Storrar, Kloof librarian, said donations of tins poured in from schools across the highway area. “The enthusiasm of the staff and children of Little Red Hen for the campaign was outstanding. Many of the children drew pictures of themselves with the tins for us to display in the library,” added Jill.

The campaign was initiated by the Kloof Library last year, to help feed poor families in the upper Highway area. It’s aim was for each child in the area to donate just one can of food to people in need. Almost 3500 cans were collected which translated into a meal for 7000 hungry people. Nine deserving organisations each received a share of the proceeds and the letters of thanks were heart-warming. Tins were also donated to The Fields Hill accident fund which was collecting goods for the victims at the time.

This year, Kloof Library challenged schools in the upper Highway area to become involved and compete with one another to collect the most tins. The appeal was also made to churches and the local community. She encouraged pupils to donate just one tin of nutritious canned food, that is, fish beans or soup. The tins will be distributed on Mandela Day, Friday 18 July. Their target is to collect more that 4000 tins of food this year.

The tins will be distributed by The Rotary Club of Kloof to the impoverished communities in and around the Highway area. The recipients of the tins will be selected carefully and the library promises to concentrate on local organisations that care for young children and the elderly.

Collection points are at Waterfall, Hillcrest and Kloof libraries, as well as Village Mall Superspar and Pick’n Pay in Kloof. Kloof Library is situated at Umzwilili Road in Kloof, next to the Kloof Town Hall. Contact 031 764 7543.
