HILLCREST Primary School celebrated all things South African on Thursday 11 September in the school’s hall when the school hosted its Heritage Day concert.
Excited children and proud parents filled the hall with the sounds of the South African National Anthem. The teachers from the various departments worked with their children to produce items, which represented South Africa.
“It was a challenge to bring all the items together, and on a small scale, the teachers experienced what many South Africans strive for every day, coming together in peace, to celebrate all our differences, working together to enjoy the many jewels of our rainbow nation,” said Chantal Murran, overall concert coordinator.
The teachers tried to represent as many of the country’s cultures as possible. The Grade 1 to 6 children were able to express themselves freely, and showcase their individual talents. The emphasis during the evening was on getting pupils to perform with enjoyment and confidence rather than as an accurate historical representation.
