GIBA Gorge has taken steps to ensure the wildlife in the park is protected after cyclists found one of the gorge’s quarry staff walking along a trail with a dead buck on his back.
The incident happened onn Sunday, 5 October between 6am and 7am.
Management at the gorge said it is treating this very seriously.
“After holding our own internal inquiries we have dismissed him. We are busy laying a criminal charge against him, but due to the legal system in SA there are complications,” management said on its Facebook page.
After the employee was apprehended, he claimed he gave the buck to some cyclists. Management appealed for witnesses who may have any information about this claim to contact them. Email chris@gibagorge.co.za
Management also urged visitors to report any suspicious activity spotted in the gorge.
“We have registered Giba Conservancy to help protect the area and to provide education to everyone. We have managed to cut back on the hunting, snares, muti harvesting and so on, but it is an ongoing problem and the responsibility of all of us, including our visitors,” management said.
There have been regular reports of animal sighting, which the gorge attributed to its effort in protecting the area’s wildlife.
