Field’s Hill restrictions ignored

Large trucks making use of Field's Hill are banned from the roadway during peak hour times, but in some instances these restrictions are being ignored.

MEC for Transport and Safety Liaison, Willies Mchunu, was present at a roadblock on Wednesday to ensure that truck drivers adhered to the vehicle restrictions on Field’s Hill.

The restrictions state that heavies may not make use of the M13 between 6am and 9.30am as well as from 4pm to 6pm.

Trucks are forced to park on the roadside during peak hour traffic. Laws were passed after 24 people were killed in a crash at the bottom of Field’s Hill in September last year.

Despite his presence, a Highway Mail reader sent a photo of a heavy truck making its way up Field’s Hill at approximately 8.15am. The reader, Joey Kapp, noted at least one large truck made its way up the notorious hill every morning since the restrictions came into affect. Kapp also said there were no Metro police on duty to enforce the law.
