WATCHING Ruby Reim on stage in character quickly reveals why she was selected as Waterfall College’s SPAR Star of the Month. The Grade 10 learner has achieved consistently in academics, while developing her talent in the cultural arena.
Ruby is delighted to have been cast as the Red Queen in the annual school production, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
She said, “The Red Queen is a lot of fun to play. She is a snappy, controlling and demanding character.”
Last year, Ruby achieved her Level 6 certificate with LAMDA. Greg Kyle, head of drama at Waterfall College, said, “Ruby is an incredible drama student and has played a lead role in productions for the past two years.”
On the Academic front, Ruby’s subject choice reflects her career aspirations. She earned a gold badge for her year marks at the end of Grade 9 and is on track to excel as she has chosen to scale back on external drama activities to focus on schoolwork. Her career aspirations are to study overseas in the area of pharmacology and genetics as she really enjoys chemistry.
Proud mom, Jessica Ramsden, said, “Ruby has had more than her fair share of challenges. A life-threatening childhood illness had a far-reaching impact on her health during her primary school years, greatly limiting the activities she could take part in. Ruby developed a discerning appetite for books, music, art and films, and found her niche in drama early on. She’s an irrepressible young woman with a keen mind, a brave heart and a wicked sense of humour.”
Following in her mother’s footsteps with a love of literature, Ruby enjoys reading fantasy novels by authors like Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Her favourite quote is from the Teen Titans comic book, ‘We cannot change the past, but the future is up to us.’
Principal Jeanette van der Merwe has taught Ruby Physical Sciences this year.
She says, “Ruby achieves outstanding Physical Sciences results and is totally committed to doing her best at all times. I wish her well as she aspires to reach for the stars and operate in the international arena.”
