WATERFALL College learner, Tyron Dolloway, is a young man with big dreams and is the school’s SPAR Star of the Month.
The Grade 10 learner combines his love of running and the outdoors with a range of exhilarating activities.
In August, he took part in the Skukuza Half Marathon, an exclusive event that sees 1 200 participants traverse a challenging course in the heart of the Kruger National Park.
Tyron first entered the race when he was 14, but was denied entry due to his age. The organisers guaranteed him a spot when he was 16 and he didn’t waste any time booking his place.
“My parents are incredible! My mom drove me nine hours to get to Kruger for a two-hour race,” he said.
Two hours before the start of the race, a squad of rangers travelled the route by vehicle and on foot to head off any big game, which would disrupt the race. Aptly, the event started with a recording of a lion’s roar.

Along the way, Tyron had to dodge a Waterbuck and tackled some testing hills, including one known as the Polly Shorts of Kruger. He finished the race in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
He injured his foot during the race and plans to use the rehab time for his foot injury to do some cycling.
“I’ve been running since I could walk and I’m a member of Hillcrest Villagers, but I’d like to do triathlons when I’m older. Now is a good chance to practice my cycling.”
“Tyron is an enthusiastic learner, with a wide-range of interests,” said the school’s deputy principal, Bryony Green. “He has been responsible for the raising and lowering of the flag for the last year and has done his duty diligently.”
With seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm, Tyron loves learning beyond the classroom, something that he does as a member of the scouts.
He was recently selected to take part in a Patrol Leaders Training Unit (or PLTU) Camp in Lexden, Pietermaritzburg.
After school, Tyron wants to take a gap year before studying and then volunteering with Sea Shepherd, the marine wildlife conservation organisation. He also plans to do the Comrades Marathon with Sibusiso Vilane, the first black man to summit Everest and is a friend, through scouts.
