Projects by learners taking part from 12 to 16 May, range from research into an alternative way to create and transfer electricity to increasing the overall energy efficiency of solar panels
Star College Girls’ High learner, Sana Shaik’s project involved a catheter design using transmission of antimicrobial blue light to fight catheter-related infections.
Antimicrobial blue light is an effective means of destroying biofilms. The edge lit catheter hub system may help control and prevent catheter-related infection by delivery of this blue light. The girl-dominated group was selected for the fair after demonstrating an advanced and in-depth understanding of their research fields, producing research of an international level and addressing contemporary issues as they experienced them in their own unique contexts.
Eskom expo executive director, Parthy Chetty said, “The young scientists will be exposed to a variety of activities and outings to stimulate them to engage in inquiry and research at a much higher level.”
The young scientists will compete alongside more than 1 800 learners from more than 75 countries for over R57 million in prizes, including bursaries and high-end laptops.
