Rescue teams recovered a woman's body from the Umbilo River after her car was swept away by floods in Pinetown.

This morning, paramedics made a grim recovery of the woman’s body with the remains of her car. ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said due to poor visibility, safety concerns and raging river, the search was put on hold last night and resumed early this morning.

“The car was located off Gordon Road around 03:00. Rescuers and eThekwini Fire Department made their way to the vehicle. Unfortunately there was a single occupant, a woman believed to be in her 50s, who had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene,” reported Jamieson.

Jamieson said the damage to the vehicle was severe as it was torn apart.

“The river has subsided, but it is visible how high this river went during the course of the storm last night,” he said.

He added that Gordon Road remains closed to the public.

“We have received multiple calls of multiple roads being water-logged and debris on the roads. I would advise motorists to exercise extreme caution and leave early to reach their destination on time.”
