Kloof couple mark 55 years of marriage

Kloof couple Peter and Delyse Cathey are celebrating 55 years of marriage built on trust, laughter and family.

KLOOF couple Peter and Delyse Cathey are preparing to celebrate 55 years of marriage.

Peter recalled that the first time he met Delyse at a social dance in 1968, he told her he was going to marry her. Three years later, on May 15, 1971, the day after Delyse’s 22nd birthday, the couple tied the knot.

The couple said the foundation of their long marriage has been trust, honesty and communication. They also share a love for music and travelling.

Delyse said she feels as though she has never known another life apart from being married to her sweetheart and raising their three sons, who are now married with children of their own.

Peter worked on the railways as a steam fitter before later joining the Pietermaritzburg Municipality as a fitter. After 30 years of service, he retired and moved with Delyse to Umhlanga, where he worked for another 14 years as a supervisor of flats. He eventually retired at the age of 75 before the couple settled in Kloof.

When their children were older, Delyse worked as a day-mother.

Speaking about her husband, Delyse said he is kind-hearted, takes good care of both her and the family, and has a wonderful sense of humour. Peter joked that Delyse “takes a lot of my nonsense,” adding that he loved her “from the word go”.

The couple acknowledged that their marriage has faced challenges over the years, but they have always worked through them together by talking things out.

Their family has grown to include three sons, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The couple describe their children as one of the greatest highlights of their lives.

Running has also been a major part of the family’s story. Peter has completed 10 editions of the Comrades Marathon, while their sons Mark, Garth and Tyron have completed nine, 20 and five races respectively.

Their daughters-in-law, Layle and Carmen, have also participated, completing 11 and two Comrades races.

The Catheys plan to celebrate their milestone anniversary surrounded by family and friends.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
