Craig Deetlefs was shot twice and killed at his home in Sarnia during a home invasion on Wednesday, February 12.
POLICE in Pinetown are investigating a home invasion that led to the death of Sarnia resident Craig Deetlefs on the morning of Wednesday, February 12.
Branch Commander Colonel Ronnie Heeralall stated that significant progress has been made in the investigation, and authorities are actively working to apprehend the perpetrators. However, due to the sensitivity of the case, further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
According to Pinetown Police communications officer Jennifer Naidu, Deetlefs was asleep when his wife heard a noise inside their home.

“She noticed two unknown men inside the house. Upon seeing them, she screamed, waking her husband, who rushed to the lounge. One of the suspects, armed with a firearm, shot him twice — hitting him in the chest and arm. The suspects then fled with two cellphones, two laptops, house keys, and a silver-grey Toyota Corolla,” Naidu reported.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and attempted to save Deetlefs, but he succumbed to his injuries.
“It is believed the suspects gained access to the property by jumping over the fence or gate. They then removed a bronze aluminum window to enter the house,” Naidu added.
Pinetown Police Station Commander Brigadier Leon Matthysen reaffirmed the police’s commitment to combating crime and ensuring community safety.
“As part of our efforts to address home invasions, we have implemented various strategies, including increased visibility patrols, community engagement initiatives, and collaboration with local security companies. We urge residents to report any suspicious activity and take proactive measures to secure their homes,” Matthysen said.
He also highlighted the station’s ongoing imbizo — a monthly community meeting where police engage with residents to address concerns and improve safety measures.
The imbizo is led by Sergeant Siboniso Shezi, who oversees community engagement and social crime prevention. Residents seeking assistance or wishing to provide feedback on the initiative can contact Sergeant Shezi on 079 213 7886.
