Alleged courier vehicle hijacker arrested

Police say when the delivery truck was robbed, the suspects loaded all the parcels, which included cellphones, laptops and clothing worth R450 000, into a van and then fled the scene.

A SUSPECT arrested by the Westville SAPS on Friday, July 11, will be charged for hijacking and kidnapping in connection with the robbery of a courier truck.

Westville SAPS spokesperson, Captain Elizabeth Squires, said the arrest came after members of the station’s crime prevention unit received information about a motor vehicle in the Westville area which was being sought following an incident on July 9 in Clairwood.

“A courier truck driver and his crew were delivering parcels when they were approached by armed suspects who forced them into the courier vehicle. One of the suspects then drove the courier vehicle to an open piece of field in Montclair, they threatened the driver and crew with their lives and forced them to open the courier van. The suspects loaded all the parcels, which included cellphones, laptops and clothing worth R450 000, into the van and then fled the scene,” said Squires.

Squires added that the arrest was the result of a joint effort between the SAPS and the Fidelity Specialised Operations and RTT Risk Management.

“The 20-year-old was detained at Westville SAPS for further investigation. A search is still underway for the rest of the suspects with various other roleplayers,” said Squires.
