Shoprite says motorcyclists’ documentation verified
The company says after the documents were verified, the motorcyclists were cleared and they subsequently returned to work on the same day.
THE Shoprite media team confirmed to the Highway Mail that the motorcyclists working for the company who were among those arrested by the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) in Westville on Monday, September 1, “for not having the proper documentation to be in the country”, had their documents verified and “were cleared”.
“We can confirm that the drivers in question had their documentation verified, were cleared and subsequently returned to work on the same day.
“All delivery drivers contracted to support our Sixty60 service are required to provide valid documentation confirming their legal right to work in South Africa before commencing employment,” said the company’s media team in response to an enquiry.

In a brief statement, the DMPS had said that it had arrested 10 undocumented immigrants on September 1 in the Westville area, who were working as delivery motorcyclists.
DMPS spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the arrested undocumented immigrants will be handed over to the SAPS, which will conduct further investigations.
The KZN SAPS media centre had not responded to a media enquiry on the status of these investigations.
The DMPS had said that one of the foreign nationals who was arrested, a Malawian, had allegedly attempted to bribe a police officer with R500.
“He was immediately arrested and faces an additional charge of attempted bribery.
“Durban Metro Police remains firm against illegal activities, and committed to upholding the law, and ensuring the safety and integrity of our communities,” reads the statement.
